It's July. The NHL season ended more than a month ago. The draft is in the rear view mirror and most of the top free agents have already been signed. That means the only on-ice hockey activities you're going to see for time being are going to come from the various prospect and development camps that take place around the NHL. In most cases, nothing really eventful takes place at these camps as far as fans are concerned. But Connor McDavid isn't your run-of-the-mill prospect, and his debut at the Edmonton ' prospect camp over the past week gave Oilers fans (apparently close to 8,000 that were in attendance) their first real glimpse of what he can do on the ice.And it was pretty amazing. First, he scored five goals in a scrimmage, which you can watch here...And then he was doing things like this on the Dillon Peters Jersey ice during drills, proving to be no match for anybody that went up against him.A few examples...The speed, via Robert Soderlind. More of his incredible skating ability that just seems so effortle s. And then the incredible hands, via Oilers Vines. Yes. This is all just from one weekend at a prospect camp that saw him going up against other teenagers and young players that have never played alongside one another. And yes, the competition will get significantly tougher when teams are actually trying to shut him down and are able to, you know, hit him.But come on. The skill here is incredible. And when you're a team that has been as bad and as hople s as the Oilers have been for as long as they have been, you're going to take any glimmer of hope that you can get. Even though the Oilers have had No. 1 overall picks in the past that brought a lot of hope and promise along with them, none of them have provided anywhere near the hope or promise that McDavid does.
