The Chicago Urban League Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation

The Chicago Urban League Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation offers entrepreneurs of color with opportunities to establish, grow and sustain businesses. Supplier diversity certificates and bids for private or public contracting could be obtained through mentoring for business and networking opportunities and financial tools as well as access to financing. Entrepreneurship webinars for free along with entrepreneurs' mentors, are available.

The Urban League provides assistance to more than 6,300 owners of businesses and job seekers in Chatham. In the future, those who support it are able to help fund this growth by making planned donations to the Urban League; such donations guarantee that its mission will continue to the next generation.

The program enables entrepreneurs who are aspiring to seek assistance from business professionals, CEOs and others. Alongside, seminars on topics like technology, capital access and procurement are also scheduled to be offered throughout the day - no cost for those who want to become an entrepreneur!

Every IMPACT Fellow is joined by one African American leader from their community, creating the opportunity for intergenerational sharing of information. Entrepreneurs who attend nine monthly training sessions will be required to do homework during the sessions to be part of the presentation of their growth plans after their fellowship. Furthermore, shared workspace is accessible at 1871 and other incubators that support startups for IMPACT fellows to utilize during this fellowship program.

Sunshine Enterprises

Sunshine Enterprises' goal is to help entrepreneurs with high potential in areas with limited resources to grow their enterprises and change their community. The 12-week Community Business Academy and ongoing Support for Business Acceleration Services (such as microgrants, coaching, workshops and networking opportunities) help this happen.

Sunshine provides entrepreneurs with financing assistance that is often the largest obstacle in starting or expanding their enterprise. The company's Business Coaches meet one-on-one with every entrepreneur to assess what type of finance is required and develop a strategy to obtain the funding. Furthermore, Sunshine works with a collection of finance partners that include Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, Byline Bank, CIBC Bank and Wintrust Community Bank among many other organizations.

The model of Rising Tide Capital is the foundation of the non-profit's operations. President Obama acknowledged Rising Tide Capital for their Community Business Academy which has contributed to the revitalization of communities and transform the lives of people. 94% graduates are now able to launch companies or establish jobs.

Sunshine Enterprises also provides support to local entrepreneurs via UChicago Local. The collaboration with UChicago Medicine and the University will allow the university to restructure its procurement department to utilize more local vendors that offer competitive bids. This helps grow the small business sector that are located in Chicago while also contributing to the social impact initiatives run by the university. UChicago Local links Sunshine Enterprises that supports local entrepreneurs in Chicago, by partnering with programs such as Chicago Innovation Exchange and Institute for Justice Clinic Entrepreneurship at Law School to further expand possibilities.

Incubatoredu

INCubatoredu provides students with the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship in a real way as they create their own product startup. Students are guided by a mentor or coach during each class, who help with their projects, such as washable foot inserts and social apps.

When teams of students progress through the program students learn to refine and strengthen their ideas for startups by conducting customer and idea exploration and market research. They also learn about prototyping building and pitching. This process helps develop communication and problem solving skills and teaches students how to quickly change to new circumstances.

Each year, teams participate in the INCubatoredu National Pitch to compete to raise seed money for their new ventures. The opportunity offers teams valuable networking experiences for investors, as well as expert advice from business professionals - an event known for the shark tank-style pitching sessions.
